Intensive Couples Therapy

Intensive Couples Therapy: Years of the Same Fight, Worked Through in Days

A couples intensive gives the two of you two to four focused days with one clinician, instead of months of weekly sessions that end just as the real conversation starts. We find the pattern, shift it, and practice what replaces it.

In person in Brooklyn and Pensacola, Florida, online worldwide, and at your location by arrangement.

Who It Is For

For Couples Who Are Done Circling the Same Conversation

You have had the same argument for years. It starts with schedules, money or intimacy and ends in the same place: one of you pushes, the other goes silent, and nothing gets settled. A couples intensive is built for that moment, when the relationship needs more than an hour a week can hold.

  • A decision is on the table - whether to stay together, whether to have another child, a move, a major financial choice.
  • Trust has been broken - the discovery of an affair or a betrayal that weekly sessions have not been able to contain.
  • Weekly couples therapy has not worked - you showed up, you talked, and the pattern stayed.
  • Your calendars do not allow weekly sessions - founders, executives, public-facing couples and parents who can commit a few days but not a standing hour.
  • Intercultural and interracial couples - partners whose families, cultures and histories need more room than a 50-minute session gives them.

Intensive vs. Weekly Couples Therapy

Why a Few Days Can Do What Months of Sessions Do Not

In weekly couples therapy, the first part of every session goes to rebuilding the thread from last time. When you finally reach the thing that matters, the hour is up. It is like being on the operating table and sent home before you are stitched up.

An intensive keeps the work open until it is finished. We are not spending years discovering what the problem is. In the first hours we name the negative cycle you are both caught in. The rest of the time goes to changing it while you are both in the room.

It is also kinder to the nervous system. With breaks built in, you can stay with something difficult, step away, and come back the same day, instead of carrying it unresolved for a week.

Weekly couples therapy

  • One hour, then a week of waiting
  • Each session restarts the conversation
  • Months or years before the core pattern is named
  • Cost spread thin over a long time

A couples intensive

  • Two to four days of focused work
  • The thread stays open until it is resolved
  • The pattern named and worked on in the first day
  • One defined investment with a clear outcome

The Investment

Measure It Against the Problem, Not Against a Weekly Session

An intensive is a significant investment, and it is easy to compare it with the price of one weekly session. That is the wrong benchmark. The right one is what the problem is already costing you: the years of the same fight, the distance at home, the decision you keep postponing.

Couples make this kind of decision about a new roof or a car without hesitation, because the alternative is worse. Your relationship carries more of your life than either. An intensive treats it that way: one committed block, solution-oriented, with a clear sense of what you are working on when you leave.

Fees are shared during the 45-minute consultation, and the consultation fee is applied toward your intensive.

How the Work Is Structured

What Happens During a Couples Intensive

I work from an attachment-based, neuroscience-backed relational lens, grounded in Relational Life Therapy (I trained under Terry Real) and Intimacy from the Inside Out, the Internal Family Systems model for couples. The arc moves through four parts.

01

Unpack the negative cycle

We slow down and map the pattern you both fall into: who pursues, who withdraws, what each move is protecting. The pattern is the problem, the people are not.

02

Mindful insight

Each of you sees what happens in your body and your reactions in real time, not as a story told afterward.

03

Parts work

Using Internal Family Systems, we work with the protective parts that take over in conflict and the older hurt underneath them.

04

Communication and repair skills

You practice listening, repair and new behavior with each other in the room, so it is familiar by the time you go home.

Intensive vs. Retreat

A Couples Intensive Is Not a Couples Retreat

A couples retreat offers time away to rest and reconnect, often in a group. An intensive is private clinical work with one licensed therapist, designed to get to the core pattern underneath your conflict and change it. You may leave rested, but that is not the point. You leave knowing what has been happening between you and what to do about it.

Intensive work also needs a foundation of safety. It is not the right format when there is ongoing violence, coercive control, active untreated addiction or a severe untreated mental health crisis. In those cases I help you find the right support first.

Questions

Intensive Couples Therapy FAQ

How long is a couples therapy intensive?

Most couples intensives run two to four days, about 10am to 5pm ET with breaks. Some couples begin with a 3-hour Mini-Intensive. The right length is decided together during the consultation.

Is intensive couples therapy more effective than weekly sessions?

For couples facing a big decision, a betrayal or a long-running pattern, concentrated time lets the work reach the core issue instead of restarting every week. Many couples leave with more clarity than they found in months of weekly therapy.

Is this the same as intensive marriage counseling?

Yes. Married and unmarried partners work the same way. The intensive focuses on the relationship pattern, whatever your status.

Is a couples intensive covered by insurance?

Intensives are private pay. Fees are shared on the 45-minute consultation, and that consultation fee is applied toward your intensive.

Can we do a couples intensive online?

Yes. Intensives are available online worldwide, in person in Brooklyn and Pensacola, Florida, in Massachusetts by arrangement, and at your location by special arrangement.

What happens after the intensive?

You leave knowing what you are working on. Integration sessions afterward support the new pattern at home, and some couples continue with ongoing work.
